Introduction
This verse within the opening of Paul’s letter, is an elegant statement of YHVH’s (Yahweh’s) character and His unwavering faithfulness. It anchors Paul’s authority as an apostle and points to the divine timing of revealing His dabar (דָּבָר – word, matter, thing) to mankind. Understanding this verse requires delving into the Hebrew understanding of 'time,' 'word,' and 'commandment' as they relate to YHVH's covenant with His people. This is not a new covenant, but an extension, building upon the foundations established long before.
Analysis
Let’s break down the verse: “but in his own time revealed his dabar (דָּבָר) in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of Elohim (God) our Savior.”
- “In his own time” (kairos – Greek; corresponding to Hebrew moed מוֹעֵד): The Greek word translated ‘time’ – kairos – isn’t simply chronological time. It's better understood as "the right time," "a fitting season," or "an opportune moment." This aligns beautifully with the Hebrew word moed (מוֹעֵד), which denotes a divinely appointed time, often connected to the appointed feasts (moedim) of YHVH. YHVH doesn’t operate randomly. His actions are always purposeful and timed for maximal impact, in accordance with His plan.
- “Revealed His dabar” (דָּבָר): The word "revealed" is critically important. It signifies not a *new* utterance, but the unveiling of something already existing within the mind of Elohim. The dabar is not just 'word' in our modern sense; it is divine communication, decree, and the very power and agency that brings things into being as we read in Psalm 33:6, “By the dabar of YHVH were the heavens made; and by the breath of His mouth all their host.”
- “The Message” (kerygma – Greek): This refers to the proclamation of the Good News, the message about Yeshua HaMashiach. However, crucially, this message isn't divorced from the broader story of Israel and the Torah. It is the culmination and fulfillment of everything prophesied in the Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures). It's an extension of the covenant, not a replacement.
- “Entrusted” (pistos – Greek; rooted in the Hebrew concept of emet אֱמֶת): Paul wasn’t simply given information; he was entrusted with something sacred, something requiring faithfulness and integrity. This echoes the Hebrew concept of emet (אֱמֶת), meaning truth and trustworthiness. The emet of YHVH is steadfast and reliable.
- “According to the commandment of Elohim our Savior”: This emphasizes that Paul’s commission didn’t originate with him. It’s a direct mandate from Elohim, depicted as our Savior. This speaks to YHVH's redemptive plan for His creation, even before the creation of man.
This verse, therefore, is a powerful affirmation of YHVH’s sovereign control, His purposeful timing, and His faithfulness to His promises. It illustrates how the message of Yeshua HaMashiach wasn’t a surprise development, but the unfolding of a plan established from the beginning.
Conclusion
Titus 1:3 reminds us that the revealing of YHVH’s purposes is always perfectly timed and aligned with His unchanging character. The good news concerning Yeshua isn't a departure from the Torah, but its ultimate fulfillment. As followers of Yeshua, we are called to be faithful stewards of this entrusted message, proclaiming it with confidence, knowing that it is rooted in YHVH’s eternal plan and covenant.
Blessing or Prayer
May YHVH bless you and keep you, and may He make His face shine upon you, revealing His dabar to you in every season. May you walk in the truth of His covenant and faithfully proclaim the good news of Yeshua HaMashiach to all those He places in your path. Amen.
